Taste of the Town: ‘crEATe’ your own recipe in Sweet Tomatoes contest

Foodies, perhaps inspired by this year’s hit film “Julie & Julia,” are invited to turn the Sweet Tomatoes salad bar into their culinary playground in a “recipe” contest.

The sweet reward for the top winner will be dining passes for the year and being highlighted cross-country for the effort. Ten finalists also earn passes.

The premise is to combine two to five ingredients in this challenge to “crEATe,” says Tracy Marks, public relations coordinator for the restaurant chain.

Calling all actors to free workshop by Theatre of Western Springs

Registrations are being taken for Studio, a free workshop for all actors and actresses who would like the opportunity to join the acting company at the Theatre of Western Springs. Studio will be taught by Kurt Naebig of Lombard, who was seen most recently in the film “Public Enemies.”

Few people realize that TWS is a non-audition theater. Graduating from Studio and a seven-play season subscription are requirements to becoming a member of the company. Once through Studio, an actor or actress can be cast as soon as the next play.

Hidden Gem: Sweet Street Candies and Goodies in Lombard

A candy buffet. It sounds like something right out of a child’s fantasy, but the notion actually exists at Sweet Street Candies and Goodies in downtown Lombard.

Co-owner of the candy shop Tony DiGiulio says candy buffets are a cheaper alternative to dessert tables at special occasion events. Instead of offering cakes, pies and cookies, an assortment of candy can be served to fulfill guests’ sweet cravings.
