Taste of the Town: Italian drama & food ‘speaks for itself’ at Il Poggiolo

A seasoned chef with a passion for Italian food, a veteran creator of Chicago dining destinations and a local couple determined to give new life to a historic building by architect Harold R. Zook combined their talents to create Il Poggiolo.

It’s set on the site of a silent movie theater, which provided the inspiration behind the 5-month-old restaurant’s name: Italian for The Balcony. It boasts a trademark interior by restaurateur Jerry Kleiner (Marché, Red Light, Opera, Gioco and Carnivale), who custom-designed the tables, seating and bar with its soaring display of potables. Hand-painted a  soft gold, the vaulted ceiling crowns dramatic red walls and rich woodwork, while overhead are oversized fringed lampshades creating a playful focal point in the airy space, capped by balcony seating.

The balcony, which Il Poggiolo translates to from the Italian, provides a vantage point for the stylish dining room. On the walls are travel photographs taken by restaurateur Jerry Kleiner. STAFF PHOTOS BY BILL ACKERMAN
