Water Street Studios accepting art submissions

For those wanting to get their artwork out to the masses, Water Street Studios in Batavia is currently accepting artwork for gallery displays on both the first and second floor of their building. The deadline for artwork proposals is Tuesday, Dec. 1.

The show will feature guest judge and accomplished artist Steve Sherrell, B.F.A and M.F.A graduate from the Art Institute. Artwork will be displayed from Jan. 15 to April 16, and the pieces must meet the specific requirements which can be found under ‘gallery submissions’ at the Water Street Studios Web Site along with the necessary application.

High school artwork adorns walls of Hinsdale Center for the Arts

See just how creative high school students can be with the Hinsdale Center for the Arts latest art exhibit that is in collaboration with the Hinsdale Central High School.

"Obstacle Course: Finding a Path in AP Studio Art" showcases artwork by 11 students enrolled with the Hinsdale Central High School's Advanced Placement Art Program. The exhibition will remain on display through Dec. 19 at the arts center at 5903 S. County Line Road.

The exhibit is open free to the public.

Your vote counts at the Holiday Hues Fine Art and Gift Gallery at the LaGrange Art League Gallery and Studio.

During a one-night-only preview party on Friday, art perusers can cast their vote for the People's Choice Award out of various local artists, who will be present at the preview party. Individuals can enjoy refreshments, wine tasting and music by Kust/Blazie violin-guitar duo. Also, with a purchase of more than $100, a person gets an original piece of artwork for free.

Holiday gift shopping at arts and crafts show in Warrenville

Looking for a unique holiday gift? Try the Book and Paper Guild's 7th Annual Fine Art and Craft Show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8 in Warrenville.

The show will include the work of local artists from the Chicagoland area who work in a variety of mediums, including glass, paper, fiber, botanicals, pottery and more. Home accessory items, hand bound books, journals, cards, original art, ornaments, pottery, jewelry, hand knits and other items will be featured.

The show will be held at Warren Tavern, 3 S 540 Second St., Warrenville. Admission is free.

Artist at Strawflower’s Holiday Open House

Artist Marla Shega of Marla’s Palette will be featured at an “Artist In Residence” day at The Strawflower Shop, 210 W. State St., Geneva. It is part of the shop’s Holiday Open House from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7.

Shega will share her “Holidays in Chicago” framed prints, featuring the Art Institute lion, the Marshall Field clock, The Chicago Theatre and Old Water Tower.

‘Love of Art Show’ unveiled in Lemont

The 15th annual “Love of Art Show and Sale” will be presented by the Lemont Artists Guild and the Lemont Park District. The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Lemont Park District, 16028 127th St.

Organizers note the show grows in size, attendance and the quality of fine art and fine craft each year. In 2008, more than 45 artists exhibited and sold their original work in painting, ceramics, photography, woodworking, drawing, glass, jewelry, fiber and other media. Only original fine art and fine craft are allowed at the show, which is judged by professional artists.

Holiday movies and student art display at North Riverside Mall Theatre

As you wait for your movie to start at the North Riverside Mall Theatre, check out the student art display.

The North Riverside Theatre, 7501 W. Cermak Road, in North Riverside, features creative and original paintings, drawings and ceramics by more than dozen aspiring art students enrolled in Proviso West High School in Hillside. The theater, which has marked its first year in operation under Classic Cinemas, will present the exhibit throughout the month of November.
 
“We love giving local students a platform within the community to showcase their talents,” says General Manager Andy Bach. “Their faces light up when the students see others admire their talents.”

Karl Arntzen’s art examines social landscape

“Progress in Works,” a collection of paintings by Karl Arntzen, will be on display from Monday, Oct. 26, through November at the Wings student art gallery in the Student Resource Center’s room 1540 at College of DuPage, 425 Fawell Blvd., Glen Ellyn. A reception with the artist will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27, at the gallery.

The Naperville artist’s works include figurative imagery, portraiture and narratives, dealing with nostalgia, escapism and mass culture. His paintings are described as exploring different cultural realities, juxtaposing the self with the other to simultaneously embrace and critique our social landscape.

The art of paper-folding at Water Street Studios

 Explore the link between origami and other forms of art and architecture with the Water Street Studios' art lecture "Geometric Creations in Art, Architecture and Origami."

The lecture, a first in a series, will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24 in Batavia. It will be presented by Lane Allen.

From cubist paintings to the architecture of Frank Gehry, this lecture will explore both traditional origami and Lane's unique "Origane" (metal folding) in contrast to many interesting aspects of art and architecture around the world. Lane will start the evening with a demonstration of his Origane work.

Admission is free to Water Street Studio artist members and $5 for other members and the general public.
