Chit-Chat & Video: Wildcat frenzy for Noble Fool Youth Ensemble

When Noble Fool Theatricals in St. Charles opted to perform the stage version of “High School Musical 2,” the show’s organizers were in for a surprise at the youth ensemble auditions. A massive amount of tweens and teens showed up, vying to win the coveted roles of Gabriella, Troy, Sharpay and more. Shellee Frazee, director and choreographer of the show, talks about casting calls and how difficult it was to choose the large-sized cast.

Tell me about the casting calls.
We had an amazing turnout. I think we had close to 100 kids come out to audition. It was fantastic. I was so impressed with the talent level and abilities of these young people. In the end, we ended up with a cast of 47. We did have to cut quite a few people, sad to say. I think (Noble Fool Theatricals) said it was the largest turnout they’ve ever had for a youth ensemble show.

And why do you think that is?
All the kids love “High School Musical.” I’m sure that was a big factor.

Have you seen any of the movies? What did you think of them?
Yes, I have seen the movies. The music is wonderful and full of energy and also catchy with a positive perspective.

What did you look for in casting?
Sometimes it had to do with the way they looked or what range they could sing. We couldn’t give someone a part if they didn’t have the vocal range for it. The musical director and I had to look at all those things and make our choice from there.

How has rehearsing been with a cast of 47?

I can’t say enough good things about the cast. They work so hard, and they have to because there’s a lot of music and dancing in a short time frame. Luckily, this cast has stepped up to the plate. I love working with young people because they are truly the future of the theater. What has been hard is that the stage version of “High School Musical” plots from place to place. There’s so many different locations. It’s difficult to go from school to a swimming pool [laugh]. That’s the part I find frustrating.

How have you been able to adjust to the scene transitions?
We took the approach that less is more. We’ve been using plot forms as the foundation of the set. It makes the transition more simple, and it keeps the pace of the show going. Simplicity is the key, as well as letting the audience use their imagination.
